Bankrupt companies like Enron have left retirees with nothing except very small Social Security checks and some employers are ending or greatly restricting company retirement programs.
If the earnings of retiring baby boomers significantly declines, this will have great impact on the economy. Baby boomers constitute an enormous part of the American purchasing power and a decline in their spending cannot help but influence the economy as a whole. Baby boomers will experience many changes in lifestyle as they get older and retire but they will affect many others also.
Even those with good retirement saving could face running out of money with longer life spans, inflation, and ever increasing health care expenses. It is clear that public policy will need to consider the needs of this largest of generation as its members reach retirement. It is likely that many baby boomers will find it essential to work long beyond the time they had planned to retire just to make ends meet. Fortunately, the employment market will grow enough to accommodate them if this happens.
