Permanent Dentures

When you are a candidate for tooth extraction then you will also be requiring tooth replacement. You have to replace those extracted teeth with individual teeth or with dentures. When I mention individual teeth I am making reference to two or three teeth which could be placed in the sockets where the teeth had been removed, and then joined to each other as well as to the anchor teeth right beside them.

If however, you have had all of your teeth extracted then you may want to think about getting removable acrylic dentures. Everybody knows what the traditional, removable acrylic dentures appear like. On the other hand, you may want to have permanent dentures. The permanent dentures are also known as implants.

Implants are put into the mouth surgically and set on about three screws that are placed into the upper or lower jaw. These screws will serve as the mount which holds the permanent dentures in place. The permanent dentures could be placed into the mouth right after extraction or later. The best way to get implants set into place is immediately after the extraction. The denture will be set into the ridge created by the extraction.

If you insert you implants in this way then you will feel as if you have your natural teeth, as you have not ever been without teeth. If you wait, then you might have been without your teeth for a while, and when the implants are set in place they will feel very strange. It can also take you longer to get used to having teeth inside your mouth again.

Before deciding what kind of dentures you would like, you need to do a little homework and research. After you have found the different kinds of dentures that are available, talk to your dentist about what you have found and check if he has anything else to offer. He may let you know what type of dentures could be best for you. Now you can make a decision. On the other hand, there is still one more thing you have to do in order to be sure that your decision is a good one.

One more thing that you have to do is check your insurance plan, to find out if it covers the type of denture that you have decided on. Not all insurance providers cover dental work, and most specifically dentures. You will want to talk to your insurance carrier about the denture which you decided on and see if your insurance plan covers that particular denture. If it does not cover the denture that you have decided on then ask what kind of denture it does cover. The same is applicable to those that have Medicare or Medicaid. Medicare will only cover the extraction but not the denture. To know what Medicaid covers you should talk to your counselor at the Department of Human Services.

Considering these two programs to see which one will cover the denture that you want should be done prior to telling your dentist what your final decision will be. You would not want to make the arrangements and start the work only to find out that you cannot afford to pay for it.
