- The Intranet - in contrast to the internet, the intranet is a private computer network. Although the intranet makes use of Internet Protocol technology, the information is protected in the organization and not shared to the whole world.
- The Extranet - at the same time is actually an extension of a company's intranet. Its primary purpose is to allow users from outside the organization like manufacturers, associates, and suppliers to gain access to certain data and information.
Here are a few of the many ways of networking computers:
- Local Area Network - or more commonly known as LAN, is a small network of computers in a limited area. One instance of LAN is a network of computers in a building.
- Metropolitan Area Network - or MAN is just like LAN. The significant difference is that MAN is used in a larger scale like metropolitan areas or states.
- Wide Area Network - or WAN is a much greater network when compared with MAN and is used to cover larger geographic areas.
- Wireless LANs and WANs - are like WAN and LAN and the only difference is the fact that they are wireless.
In computer networking, there are lots of ways to interconnect computer systems like using coaxial wires, optical fibers, and even through power lines. But as technology improvements there are newer ways to do this such as wireless technology which includes Bluetooth or Wi-Fi.
